November 9, 2025 · Self Improvement

Looking at the demands from our modern life, the hustle and bustle, the rush in keeping up with our daily needs and our constant yearn for more, it has become such a deal to always strike a work-life balance.

Do you find it difficult to stop thinking about an incomplete task or you find yourself still seeking a means to accomplish tomorrow’s work after getting home?

Well, you are not alone friend, because that happens to be how I end my day most times.

One act I have also not yet learnt to do, just like many others, is how to tap out from work completely, and make room for my body and mind to get freshened for the next day.

Whereas, on other occasion, many of us just want to completely zone out either with a good sleep or spending hours in front of the TV.

Even though these might seem like some really relaxing activities to engage in, however, making this a daily basis routine can get boring and even stressful because as much as relaxation is an essential part of productivity, getting extremely lazy only ends up encouraging and giving room to fatigue.

One major thing to take note of is that when thinking about how to relax your muscles, you must also be thinking about how to enjoy the moment while fully engaging yourself.

When unwinding and working towards achieving a work-life balance, it is required for one to mindfully do away with work activities completely after work hours, even if you happen to be working from home.

It is important to give room for the body and mind to feel there is some form of change in activity which should be more relaxing and also actively engaging. This helps one easily achieve that calmness needed both physically and mentally.

So if you find yourself constantly feeling clueless after spending most of your evening either sleeping, watching TV or just sitting idle all through, here are some productive yet soothing ways to help yourself on how to relax after work.

14 Tips To Relax And De-stress

1. Make up your mind that you want to relax

After a very busy and hectic schedule, one very easy way to manage stress and decompress after work is by first acknowledging that work is over and it is time to prioritize you.

Often times, I find myself still bugging over one task I was not able to complete at work while showering or in the process of making dinner which ends up hindering me from getting well rested and refreshed.

When making efforts towards how to relax after work, it is important you make up your mind first to change your focus and also declutter your thoughts off unnecessary worries, then you can easily switch to a more personal activity that seems more comfortable and enjoyable to do.

2. Enjoy the fresh air

A stuffy and hot room can get one really tensed. If you want to stay conscious about how to destress after work, moving out of a room with very low air circulation to a conducive environment helps the body feel more relaxed.

You could just step out for a little while and do some breathing exercise, take a walk around in the evening, or sit under a tree.

The fresh air you inhale in the process helps you to some extent in clearing your mind from worries and also help maintain physical calmness.

3. Engage in activities that helps you stretch your muscles

If you are like me that has to sit in one position almost all through work hours, then you will understand how easily it is to get muscles and joints strains.

I have learnt how to relax after work by engaging in those activities that helps loosen my muscles for example walking, playing tennis or attending some yoga sessions.

These are good ways to make shortened and tightened muscles more relaxed and flexible. It also helps you calm your mind. This makes it easy for you to resume work the next day feeling more energetic.

4. Take a warm bath

Apart from how taking a warm bath makes one feel good, it has also been proven to be a good go-to activity if one is wondering how to relax after work.

One big effect stress often build up in the  body is how it causes the muscles to get tensed up, however, the heat from having a warm bath helps loosen the muscles and also remove cramps.

This makes the body maintain a soothing feeling both physically and mentally. Having a good warm bath has always been my favorite self-care practice because of how I get to sleep like a baby afterwards.

Trust me, bathing not only helps you sleep faster but also have you experience a sound sleep. This is also how to wind down after working late.

5. Set work-life boundaries

Distinguishing and recognizing when to draw the line between work and personal life is also a way that could easily help if you are wondering how to relax after work.

If you happen to be working from home, make sure you create a specific time work should end.

You could stand up from your work space or go wash up, this helps you easily acknowledge that it is time to discontinue your tasks.

Making this a routine enables you prepare your mind and body towards relaxation and also helps in calming the nerves.

6. Create a realistic weekly to-do list

One thing I have noticed about writing down a list of activities I want do daily is how it helps me avoid getting disorganized and excessively worried,  even if the tasks are yet to be accomplished.

Creating a to-do list not only helps you in paying maximum attention to your personal needs, it has also been proven to aid psychological balance.

It can be quite difficult to have several commitment and unfinished tasks on your desk without getting overwhelmed.

Now, you creating a to-do list doesn’t necessarily mean you are writing down and implementing all task at once, it simply means you are planning on prioritizing what to do based on urgency, needs and present interest.

This helps you do things more productively. Imagine getting back home, after a very long busy work day and you already have about 10 different activities you need to attend to, even if all were to be very simple chores, the thought of it alone might get you already stressed out.

However, setting a plan on how you want to do it or picking out the top most important ones makes it easier to achieve and also maintain that relaxed feeling.

A to-do list is also a good way to maintain psychological and physical balance when wondering how to relax after work.

7. Change into something comfortable

After a long day, one thing I always long to do is doff any clothing compressing my body.

Coupled with the demands from our present world and our already tiresome daily lifestyle, wearing heavy, uncomfortable or extremely thick fabrics can be so stressful.

A good way to feel well balanced after a shower is to change into a light, breathable and less heavy fabric.

This allows you feel much refreshed and also makes it more comfortable to move around the house without feeling constricted.

That makes it easier to admit that work is over which also serve as a good way to stay refreshed if you are still confused about how to relax after work.

8. Enjoy some family bonding moments

I once used some storytelling sessions with my 5 years old daughter as a means of destressing, and it was a very effective experience.

If you are clueless about how to relax after work without alcohol or any hard drug, or how to enjoy the moment fully after a busy day, spending some quality family time is a good way to share thoughts about both the good and the not so good experiences and also build up new memories through play, or games.

Asides from the fact that bonding with family enables the growth of a healthy relationship, it also gives room to share comfort and care which helps the mind ease off unnecessary worries and anxiety. These always has a positive effect on our well-being.

9. Do some deep breathing exercise

After a long busy day, find a very comfortable corner of your room, maybe your bed and sit still, inhale some air for few seconds, hold for up to 6 seconds and exhales for a few seconds too.

Feels good, right? Yes, it does. Try not to force the breathing process, allow it happen naturally because forcing it can make one feel tensed.

The deep pattern of breathing have been proven to aid relaxation even more. Engagement in breathing exercise is a good way to improve blood circulation, calm anxiety and helps one sleep better.

This is one meaningful way to end your day if you are bothered about how to relax after stressful day at work.

10. Prioritize self-care

Setting aside 20 minutes to prioritize and pamper yourself is not in any way a luxurious act, in fact it is an important part of productivity because if we don’t get enough rest, it becomes quite difficult to keep up with the right energy for giving our best.

One of my favorite self-care practice is getting someone do a massage for me, this helps me relax my muscles and also clear my head.

You could choose any activity that works well for you, what matters most is that you are putting yourself first and also caring for yourself.

11. Make yourself a cup of warm tea

Asides from the traditional believe that tea helps in reducing stress, it has also been scientifically proven that tea drinkers especially black tea find it easy to recover from stress and rest better.

Teas that lack caffeine are good natural muscles relaxants, which helps elevate mood and relaxes the body after a very busy day.

12. Seek helping hand

Never act the super human when you can simply delegate task and chores. Seeking help does not only boost your productivity level, but also helps reduce the number of things you get to do after a busy day.

You could seek assistance from available friends and family members. This allows you easily prioritize and choose some achievable number of tasks, this is a good way to reduce your stress level and the number of things you have to worry about.

When asking others to help you out, you could create a list, timeframe or a form of challenge in the process of getting work done, this makes the work easier, faster and more interesting.

13. Join a dance class

If you are thinking of how to relax your muscles and also improve your mood, engaging in an activity that actively engages the body and mind is a good way to go.

When the body responds to rhythm, just like smiling, the body releases endorphins which helps boost the mood and aids relaxation.

Dancing is itself a form of enjoyable exercise which enables the muscles loosen up and get more flexible, also exercises are proven to be one of the best way to reduce stress and maintain calmness.

Many people who spend most of their day staying busy often get more energetic and refreshed after engaging in a dancing session.

Dancing often helps one focus on something new, it is the best time to do away with all work related issues and worries.

14. Visit the spa

One good way to destress your nerves in case you are thinking about how to relax after work is going to the spa once in a while.

Having a spa bath for instance occasionally helps you pamper and take care of yourself more. It is just a good remedy if you’re stressed and confused on how to unwind after a work loaded, sunny and tedious work day.

There is a soothing effect that comes after a hot tub soak, a massage or a pedicure and manicure session. Engaging in all these helps the body relief stress, relax more and even improve one’s sleeping habit.

Always remember to try out this activities based on your interest and mood for the day, you could try them out one after the other on different days, just make sure you don’t get too overwhelmed in the process.
